Girl w basket illus.JPEG

(Roud Folk Song Index 13188) This nursery rhyme was recorded in America in 1879.  The tune is also sung as "It's Raining, It's Pouring,"  "Rain, Rain, Go Away," and "Ring Around the Rosie."  There are some versions that sing about losing a "yellow basket."  The song has more modern connections with the jazz standard sung by Ella Fitzgerald (1938).

Children first sang A-Tisket A-Tasket as a rhyming game. Children sit in a circle and while singing, one child walks around the circle of children carrying a handkerchief. When the children sing, "I dropped it" the child with the handkerchief drops it in the lap of a child in the circle.  Upon receiving the handkerchief this child is to get up,  chase, then tag the one who dropped it. If the one who dropped the handkerchief is tagged, he or she is to join the circle, and the game begins again with the new handkerchief holder.
