#25 Go Down Moses

"Go Down Moses" is a Spiritual, originally sung by enslaved African-Americans, during the late 18th and 19th centuries. The song features the story of the Biblical prophet, Moses, who, though himself, an Israelite, was able to help free his people from the bondage they endured at the hands of the Pharoah (King of Egypt). Enslaved people in America identified with the story and sang Spirituals as "Go Down Moses," while they worked and hoped for a life of freedom. The song continues to be sung, but now by Americans of many diverse races and creeds.
